Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – CBT – is a type of psychotherapy where a patient is encouraged to challenge their unhelpful beliefs about themselves, the world and others. It also helps the patient to appreciate that how and what they think (cognitions) and do (behaviour) affects their feelings – both positively and negatively. A CBT psychotherapist will therefore work with the patient to change the way they ‘think’ and what they ‘do’ in order to ultimately help them ‘feel’ better and overcome their emotional difficulty. However, unlike some of the other talking therapies, it focuses on the ‘here and now’ problems and difficulties. Instead of focusing on the causes of patients’ distress or symptoms in the past, it looks for ways to improve their state of mind now.’

To celebrate the World Mental Health Day, the trainees, an elite group of Libyan Mental Health Professionals have started the foundations and cornerstone for the first Libyan professional association for CBT in Libya.

The objectives of the associations are:
1. Contribute to the promotion of mental health in Libya through the development of CBT and other evidence- based therapies.
2. Promote research in CBT and disseminate the results of such research.
3. Promote high standard of education, training and practice.
4. Promote the provision and awareness of CBT to all sections of the public.

The trainees are now in their second block of training already having started using CBT principles in assessing Libyan patients empowering them to heal their wounds.

The Cognitive Behaviour Therapy “CBT” program has been developed to the highest International standards of professionalism and teaching being conducted by experts from the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre of the United Kingdom where the training has been researched and successfully implemented in many other countries.

The program is endorsed by the Libyan Ministry of Health, and the Ministry Of Culture & Civil Society in Libya.
